General Information
Most foot and ankle injuries in cars are caused by head-on crashes. This is because the lower extremities are the first to absorb the impact in this type of collision. Another percentage of foot injuries are caused by rollovers and side impacts.
Foot injuries occur most often in head-on collisions, but can occur in any type of car crash. The foot, toe, and ankle areas are made up of many bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments. When a high-impact crash occurs, the body naturally tenses up in anticipation of the impact. This means that the ankle and foot receive the full force of the impact of the car and the weight of the person's body. This extreme stress on the area around the ankle and foot can cause severe damage to the tendons and ligaments, resulting in fractures and tears.
Likewise, any overwhelming pressure from loose automobile materials hitting the vulnerable foot and ankle during a car accident can result in severe or puncture wounds to the skin, which can be very serious.
Some of the most common symptoms are:
Inflammation
Contusions
Tearing of tendons, ligaments, and muscles
Severed ligaments, muscles, skin, and tendons
Sprains
Fractures
Broken bones
